Zoe Barnard was born in Hong Kong, moved to Canberra as a teenager and recently relocated to New York. This global nomad is passionate about film & loves Polaroids because you have one shot to nail a moment in time. While on location in Port Douglas, Zoe was in her element taking shots of palm trees & pineapples in paradise. We get to know Zoe & talk all things photography with her.
DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN 3 WORDS…
“Motivated, observant and kind.”
ON HER PASSIONS:
“I’m really passionate about filmmaking. I love film, I love the whole concept; it’s like any other art, like writing or going to an art museum. It’s a way of showing the world. With film there are so many elements that you can control, like audio and visual and ambience, it’s so powerful. I’d love to be able to use it for the right reasons.”
ON HER LOVE FOR SNAPPING POLAROIDS:
“It’s so different from shooting on your phone or shooting on any other camera. Even on a camera you have unlimited shots, with a Polaroid it either works or it doesn’t. It’s the greatest feeling when it turns out good. It’s really capturing a moment in time.”
TIPS FOR NAILING THE PERFECT POLAROID:
“Lighting. That’s the thing that’s tricky. Think about silhouettes, think about where the light is coming from. Think about if you even have enough light to use a Polaroid, because that’s basically all they need. Other than that, it’s the general set up of the shot. I always make a square shape with my fingers [to frame the shot], checking “does it all fit, have I framed it?”. Also use the framing rule of thirds.”
THE WOMEN WHO INSPIRE HER:
“My grandmother and my mother. They’ve both moved their entire families across the world (my grandma and her 7 kids from Bahrain to Adelaide, and my mum moved my family from Hong Kong to Canberra). They’ve done many things in their lives that I find inspirational, but one of the most empowering things for me is how they always manage to be so supportive, nurturing and strong.”
BEST THING ABOUT B-ING ZOE:
“My heritage. Being half Indian, half Australian and growing up in Hong Kong. I love knowing I don’t belong to a certain place. Exploring all these different parts of my history is what makes me who I am.”
