LAURA WELLS

March 26, 2018
Model & Marine Biologist Laura Wells was chosen as 1 of 80 women in Science to go on an expedition to Antarctica. We were proud to jump on board as a sponsor, donating money towards her trip where she’ll be a part of a women leadership program. We spoke to the avid explorer while she styled our new season activewear.

ON HER EXPEDITION TO ANTARCTICA:
“I’ve been selected as 1 of 80 international women in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) to participate in a homeward bound project. It’s a 12-month women in science course. It’s all about leadership skills, science communication skills and visibility of female scientists. Most people only think of Marie Curie who has been dead for quite some time now as a famous female scientist. No one is really talking about what incredible work females are doing in that space and how they’re changing the outcomes of our future.”

ON THE SELECTION PROCESS:
“About 4000 applied and 80 of us were selected to go. I think there’s 14 different countries that the women come from. Everyone has really amazing jobs and they’re doing some incredible work in the field across human, environmental, climate change and lots of different avenues.”

ON HER PASSION FOR THE ENVIRONMENT:
“I’m definitely passionate about creating a better future for everyone and educating people on what they can do as an individual; because there’s so much that we can change and educate others on. And the ocean, the ocean is amazing. It’s a whole new world and planet down there, it’s full of inspiration and curiosity so I’m very passionate about keeping our oceans healthy so that future generations can experience them.”

THE LITTLE THINGS PEOPLE CAN DO EVERYDAY TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE:
“There’s lots of different little things. For me, I try to be as plastic free as possible. That means using re-usables. Re-usable coffee cups, re-usable bags, coffee cups, water bottles and staying away from plastics that we use for 5 minutes and then throw away. A really good one is to say no to straws. When you order a drink say ‘no straw please’ because you don’t really need it, you have lips.”

WHAT SHE LOVES ABOUT HIKING:
“I really like being immersed in nature because there are so many different things to see. The sounds, the sights and the curious animals. You spot animals that you wouldn’t normally see in suburbia. It really gives you a better appreciation of the world around you and makes you realise that you’re a small part of this planet and that everything is interconnected. If I walk through a national park and leave rubbish then that’s going to affect the animals, biology and biodiversity of that area. Everything that we do has a flow on effect whether you know about it or not.”

HER REVIEW OF OUR NEW FLEECE LINED TIGHT:
“It is super comfortable, warm but not too hot and you know that it’d be really good for a cold day to go out and explore. On cold days, you actually get a lot more animals out as well. It’d be really good for hiking in autumn, going into winter or in the snowy mountains.”
