Kendal Schuler is a model & Mum living in Sydney. One year ago, she gave birth to her son Ryka at home on her bathroom floor. We speak to Kendal about her birth, her Mother’s Day plans and her advice for new Mums.
ON HER BIRTH:
“I went into labour at our local pub after having a burger and fries, as you do. I started feeling a bit strange so went home, I started to feel pains and they got stronger and stronger. I called my midwife and she said that I sounded like I was fine. She said stop timing the contractions, relax and watch Netflix. 3 hours after that, my waters broke as I was getting out of the shower getting ready to go to the hospital. He came out in 2 pushes on the bathroom floor. It was crazy.”
HER FONDEST MOTHERHOOD MEMORY SO FAR:
“His first word was ‘Dada’, that was a pretty exciting moment. Every milestone that they go through is exciting. But every night after we bath him, my partner and I give him nappy off time and he runs around on the bed without his nappy on, and he just giggles. That’s my favourite part of the day.”
WHAT SHE’S LEARNT ABOUT MOTHERHOOD:
“There’s no you time and that is so selfless. I didn’t understand that before I had a baby but I think it’s amazing that as women, we can put everyone else in front us. We can take a step back from all our needs and what we want, and put someone else completely first without any hesitation. I think that’s an amazing quality we have as women.”
HER BEST ADVICE FOR NEW MUMS:
“Don’t buy all the stupid gimmick stuff that people say you need on Instagram and don’t feel the pressure to have the coolest nursery or the best clothes. Just be true to yourself and your style. Have your essentials and build up from there. Don’t overspend because you’re going to need that money down the track and you’ll only have that stuff for 2 seconds.”
THE VALUES SHE HOPES TO PASS ONTO RYKA:
“Just to be a nice boy, not to be a mean boy.”
Kendal wears Cotton On Body sleepwear.
