Singaporean Grace Tan Journey says she’s seen huge changes in herself since switching to plant based eating. The blogger documents her journey with veganism on her YouTube channel. We find out how she lives sustainably & what a typical day of eating looks like for her.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN VEGAN?
“I went Vegan on 11 March 2015 so it has been a little over 2 years now.”
WHAT CHANGES HAVE YOU SEEN IN YOURSELF SINCE GOING VEGAN?
“Where do I even begin! Haha. For physical changes, I’d say that my hair has gotten a lot stronger ever since I’ve made this lifestyle change, along with my nails as well. I’m blessed with pretty good skin but ever since eating more fruits and vegetables, sometimes I even feel that my skin is legitimately glowing! I feel a lot healthier and maybe I am at my healthiest that I have ever been, and I’ll be turning 22 in November!
But I have to say that the biggest positive change for me was with my mental health. I have struggled in the past with my relationship with food and after being educated and educating myself more on the benefits of a plant-based vegan diet, it changed my whole perspective on food and how healing it can be when eating this way. They say that ‘your food affects your mood’, and I 100% believe that that’s true. I remember I used to feel disgusted, physically and mentally, whenever I ate at a fast food chain like McDonald’s, KFC, Popeye’s etc, because little did I know that animal products are actually really bad for you and can cause a lot of health issues in the long run.”
WHAT ARE YOUR TIPS FOR GIRLS WANTING TO TRY VEGANISM?
“I feel like the biggest advice I could give is to EDUCATE yourself, because once you know the truth it’s pretty hard to deny it. At first it may be hard, but after a while, you’ll get the hang of it and it’ll be as easy as a vegan pie 😉 Also, it will be great to find people living this lifestyle so that you will feel motivated and not like you are alone, because you’re not! 🙂
I could name a few of my favourite vegan influences that are from Australia, DJ Tiger Lily, Bonny Rebecca, Tess Begg, from America, Mr and Mrs Vegan, Apples and Amanda, High Carb Hannah, from the U.K., Family Fizz, and so much more! Surround yourself with people who make you feel, do and look good.”
WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO LIVE MORE SUSTAINABLY?
“To be honest, at the beginning I didn’t care about the environment as much as I do now, but after constantly educating myself more and more on how the production of animal products such as meat, is responsible for nearly 20% of all greenhouse gases and also the amount of water to produce a pound of meat is between 1800-2500 gallons of water! That’s a lot of water used to make just a pound of meat! With the same amount of water, we could produce 16 pounds of broccoli, 25 pounds of potatoes, enough soybeans for three pounds of tofu or enough wheat for nearly five pounds of whole wheat bread. This really put it into perspective for me.”
WHAT ARE YOUR TIPS FOR LIVING A GREENER LIFE?
“As mentioned above, EDUCATE yourself! Also by eating at least 1 vegan meal a day, you have already reduced your carbon footprint.”
WHAT DOES A TYPICAL DAY OF EATING LOOK LIKE FOR YOU?
“Lots of vegetables, I LOVE MY GREENS. I have kale, spinach and broccoli. I also love root vegetables such as potatoes, sweet potatoes, and pumpkins. Basically I eat all vegetables because I genuinely love them! I have a lot of fruit as well! My all time favourite fruit is hands down, MANGOES! I love Aussie mangoes the most! But it can be a little expensive to get them in Singapore although that’s never really stopped me!”
“I’d love to say I have a favourite recipe but I don’t! Because it varies daily! I don’t follow any recipe at all, I usually come up with a recipe on the spot when I’m cooking. But if you need any recipe ideas, the people that I have mentioned above, have a lot of amazing yummy vegan recipes that will blow your mind!”
