GABBY ON VISUAL ART

July 21, 2017
Artist & activist Gabrielle Richardson is passionate about leading a creative life. With her friends, she created an online platform called Art Hoe Collective to showcase the work of inspirational artists. The graphic design graduate has lived in Philadelphia, Boston and now resides in New York. In her down time, she runs free art classes for children in Brooklyn. We talk all things art with Gabby…

ON HOW ART HOE COLLECTIVE STARTED:
“We all met online, it was a group of likeminded individuals who came together to build this platform. We have workshops, we have also had art shows and it’s all coming together to be more than just an online platform. We’re also trying to enter the physical realm and trying to turn the URL into IRL.”

ON THE ART CLASSES SHE RUNS IN BROOKLYN:
“I do these projects called Afternoon For You and I team up with a bunch of artists from the New York area. We come together to create this program for kids who live in Brooklyn. It’s a day where they can celebrate self-expression, learn about art and also about nutrition.”

“We also give free yoga classes. My friend and I started it because public schools in America are really lacking in resources and they’re continuing to cut the arts and music from school programs especially in such tough, hateful times. Kids need that kind of outlet. So we saw the problem and did our best to remedy the situation.”

WHEN SHE FIRST GOT INTO ART…
“As a child. My parents always let me and they really supported me in all of my artistic endeavours. Which I feel is not common, especially as a person of colour because people often want you to be successful in a typical way. It’s very hard to be successful as an artist but my parents told me to do whatever I want to the best of my ability.”

ON THE ART SHE PRODUCES…
“I create sculptures, paintings and performance art as well. I kind of do a bit of everything.”

HER BEST PIECE OF LIFE ADVICE:
“Let things happen in your life. Sometimes you need to take that leap of faith and you’re nervous, but don’t be afraid to put yourself out there. Open yourself up to new experiences.”
