Our campaign Anything But Basic is all about celebrating what makes us unique. We talk to Emma Carey on how her skydiving accident turned out to be the best thing to ever happen to her.
On June 9th 2013, Emma’s life changed in a single moment. She was 5 days into what was meant to be a three-month Europe trip, when a skydiving jump went wrong.
ON THE MOMENT SHE KNEW SOMETHING WAS WRONG:
“When the instructor went to pull the cord, something went wrong and the cords got all tangled, they wrapped around his neck and strangled him unconscious. Because of that, he couldn’t fix and untangle the parachute and we fell really, really fast. When we landed on the ground, I was on my belly and because he was strapped to my back, he was on top of my back. I went to roll him off me to go get help and that’s when I realised I couldn’t move anything from my waist down.”
“It was so scary. When I was falling, I thought it was the most terrifying thing in the world because I thought I was about to die. But then landing and realising I couldn’t move, that was a million times scarier.”
Emma broke L1 in her spine as well as other parts of her spine and pelvis. The doctors told her she had a spinal cord injury, was a paraplegic and would never be able to walk again.
ON HOW SHE REACTED TO THE NEWS:
“It was horrible to hear, absolutely devastating. But always a part of me didn’t believe it. There was so much of me that was like ‘no, that’s not true.”
She defied the odds and four months later, she slowly starting walking.
ON HOW SHE STAYED SO POSITIVE DURING HER RECOVERY:
“I was so upset for the first two weeks in Switzerland and I think it was mainly because I was on really strong painkillers. I was telling the doctors ‘I just want to die, I don’t want to be here, I don’t want to do this’ but then one day, I woke up and was like ‘okay, this is what’s happening, you can either deal with it or you can be depressed about it’. After that moment, I was so positive and happy.”
WHY HER ACCIDENT IS THE BEST THING THAT’S EVER HAPPENED TO HER…
“I’ve changed so much from it. Physically, my body is a lot worse than it was before but I’m a lot happier and view the world totally differently. I don’t know if I’d ever have gotten to this place if it didn’t happen so it definitely changed things for the better.”
OUR CAMPAIGN ‘ANYTHING BUT BASIC’ IS ALL ABOUT CELEBRATING WHAT MAKES US UNIQUE. WHAT MAKES YOU UNIQUE?
Emma’s friend Bec from @thestudioupstairs_ jumps in to answer for her…
“I think your energy. I don’t know if Emma would want to say that about herself, but when she walks into a room, the whole energy of the room shifts and is so much more vibrant and positive.”
