August 30, 2017
Cotton On Body Breaky for Boobies Breast Cancer
Emily Townsing and Clare Barnes are the inspiring pair behind Geelong’s annual “Breaky for Boobies” event, raising money for the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF). Both women developed the ever-growing initiative on top of juggling families and careers in Marketing and Interior Design, and within just 12 months have impressively become one of the NBCF’s largest community fundraisers in Australia. Get to know Emily & Clare and find out how you can get involved below.

WHAT HOBBIES DO YOU ENJOY IN YOUR SPARE TIME?

Emily – What spare time? Haha. I enjoy spending time with my little fam and making things (all sorts of things)!
Clare – Family time is super important for us, so that is top priority. I also have a blog, and I love writing and sharing my stories.

DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN ONE SENTENCE…

E – Mum, Sister, Wife, Daughter. Creative, super obsessive and very protective of the people I love!
C – Mother, Wife, Dreamer, Creator, Believer.

ANY KEY MENTORS OR PEOPLE WHO HAVE DEEPLY INFLUENCED WHO YOU ARE?

E – Not especially! I take inspiration from all sorts of places, but also think it’s important to be yourself in everything you do!
C – In the blog world, Chantelle Ellem is my mentor. She has shared her genius with me time and time again. Besides that, many different people inspire me daily.

ANY LIFE CHANGING EXPERIENCES, IF SO WHAT WERE THEY?

E – Becoming parents was probably the biggest game-changer in our lives but it’s been the best adventure of our lives!
C – Oooh. I have had a few. I lost my Mum to Breast Cancer when I was 12. This was extremely life changing for my family, and in my teen years, led me down a pretty dark path – until I met my husband when I was 16 and he helped me to change the path for the better!

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU?

E – My girls and my husband! Making things better for them and bringing some sparkle into their day – it’s a huge part of why I do Breaky for Boobies!
C – Life in general motivates me. We can all get bogged down in the stress and speed of life, but sometimes we need to stop and slow down and take joy in the little things.

HOW DID THE IDEA FOR BREAKY FOR BOOBIES COME ABOUT?

Established in 2016, “Breaky for Boobies” was born from a simple wish to do something so that we could donate to the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) to help them further their important work. We both connected via Instagram a couple of years back and soon figured out we were both Geelong locals. We thought it would be great to try and do ‘something’ to try and raise some money for the NBCF, but never in a million years anticipated it would turn into what it has.

WHY IS THE BREAST CANCER CAUSE SO CLOSE TO YOUR HEART?

Breast cancer effects so many. Sadly, it has about 1.5 degrees of separation. If we aren’t directly affected, we are indirectly affected.
Clare’s Mother suffered for 2 years before losing her battle at 41 years old. Emily has also had close friends and family suffer from the disease.

HOW LONG HAS THE EVENT BEEN RUNNING FOR?

This is our second year of Fundraising. 2016 was a huge success with over 150 businesses on board with product, service and financial donations.
2016 saw us raise over $21,500 in a short period of time.

WHAT HAS THE RESPONSE FROM THE LOCAL COMMUNITY BEEN LIKE?

It has been amazing! We have been so overwhelmed with the support and the generosity of the donations. It’s wonderful!

WHERE DO THE FUNDS RAISED GO?

All funds go directly to the National Breast Cancer Foundation for vital Breast Cancer research. Our event is a Pink Ribbon event and the NBCF have informed us that Break for Boobies is one of the largest community fundraisers in the country! How cool is that?!

WHAT CHANNELS DO YOU USE TO PROMOTE THIS CAUSE AND ITS PROJECTS?

We use Instagram and also Facebook. The power of social media when used for good is incredible!
