Georgia Gibbs & Kate Wasley are best friends, models & founders of body positive movement, Any BODY. After posting a photo together online, they were judged, compared and criticized. Now, they’re championing for self-love & body acceptance. They want women to quit the comparisons and to #LoveAnyBODY. Kate & Georgia show how our new swimwear flatters everybody.
ON THE PHOTO THAT STARTED IT ALL…
Georgia – When I posted a photo of Kate and I on my social media account it was actually just us two out having a drink on the weekend, in Sydney. I guess the response we got was quite shocking instead of positive it was just a lot of people criticizing both myself and Kate. Accusing me of photoshopping myself thinner or photoshopping my friend bigger, which of course that hits you really hard, it’s not a nice thing to read. Also it definitely affected Kate as well. I guess that’s what really shocked us and why we created Any BODY; to create a positive change.
THE MESSAGE THEY WANT TO SHARE:
Georgia – Our biggest positive body message would have to be quit the comparisons. You can see in mainstream media now people use models of all shapes and sizes but they don’t necessarily use them along side each other, it’s very rare.
Kate – We believe there is no size standard for today’s modern woman and that healthy comes in all shapes and sizes.
HOW THEY REACTED WHEN KHLOE KARDASHIAN REPOSTED THEM…
Georgia – We were very shocked when Khloe K posted our photo. She is definitely very influential so I think someone preaching our message is really, really amazing. I mean she has spoken a lot of times about the body image issues she has faced herself. She has always said, “I’m the curvier sister, I’m the taller sister”, and I think both Kate and I can relate to that…you know feeling different around different women. It was a big shock but really awesome.
ON THEIR HOPES FOR THE FUTURE:
Kate – I just hope that more girls in a variety of different shapes and sizes, that different genders and races are used in advertising and together. Because so often you’ll see two plus size girls or two slim girls modeling together and you can’t really see the contrast. I mean you’ve just gotta look around and see all the different body shapes.
WHEN THEY FEEL MOST EMPOWERED:
Georgia – I feel most empowered when I surround myself with other really strong women. I just did Miami Swim Week, we walked a body positive runway and every woman there was different shapes, different sizes, different backgrounds and I find that so empowering to be able to know that other women can watch that runway and relate to at least one of us. I think it’s amazing.
Kate – This is probably a weird answer, but when I feel most empowered is probably when I’m at the beach in a bikini; because I’ve been through a phase where, you know, I was so self conscious and even getting in a one piece swimsuit was a big deal for me. I remember, this is going back when I was a lot thinner than I am now, and I was like “oh my god, I would never wear a bikini…” and now you know I’m size 16 and I’ll just get in a bikini and I’m like “sweet, let’s go haha!”
THEIR FAVOURITE COTTON ON BODY SWIMWEAR STYLES:
Georgia – My favourite style would have to be the high waisted pink brief; I think it looked equally as flattering on Kate and I. We both felt equally as comfortable in it, I think it’s a really good suit for all women to chuck on and feel great.
Kate – I liked the green bikini with the tie bottoms – the adjustable ones. They are definitely my favourite cos you can kind of wear them higher than your hips or as hipsters. They are always great cos you can just adjust them to you.
