Australia model Alex Kate Knight is a certified pilates instructor living in New York. She tells us what workouts she’s been following during pregnancy…
With a degree in Biomedical Science, a Certificate in Holistic Health Nutrition & a Pilates Teacher Certification; Alex Kate knows her stuff when it comes to health. The globetrotter teaches Pilates three times a week, models full time & runs a café enterprise, Bluestone Lane, with her husband Nick Stone.
Bluestone Lane is their way of taking the seriously good Melbourne coffee scene to the east coast of America. Currently, Alex & her husband have 18 cafes & coffee shops around New York & Philadelphia with plans to expand to the West Coast as well.
Between all of that, the pair is about to embark on a new chapter with the birth of their first child expected later this year. We spoke to Alex about all things pregnancy…
ON LISTENING TO HER BODY:
“Since falling pregnant, it’s a whole different level of body awareness because you have to listen to your body. It gives you nausea or a headache and then you have to slow down & stop. For me who loves doing a lot, that’s been a very different learning curve.”
HOW HER EATING HABITS HAVE CHANGED DURING PREGNANCY…
“In my first trimester, I was surprised if I actually listened to what my body was telling me, it actually made me feel better.”
“My normal diet would be more fresh foods and green juices but it didn’t want any of that in the early stages. It just wanted normal, bland rice & toast –a lot of carbohydrates. And interestingly for me, I never had a lot of dairy before but that’s been my number one craving.”
“I would have like 4 pieces of toast and still be ravenous. For example, broccoli made me feel nauseous which is something I basically lived on. The 2nd trimester & on is when you usually get back to your norm. I’m probably having a bit more animal protein than I’ve had before.”
ON HER PREGNANCY WORKOUTS:
“Before pregnancy, I used to run a lot, do a lot of boxing and of course, Pilates. But now, I don’t run anymore, I do cycling as my cardio. I’ve done some preggie yoga classes, preggie barre classes & do a lot of my own Pilates at my studio.”
